[Our mission: To understand the processes altering the genetic makeup of different organisms as well as their biological and medical impact.]

The Genetic Information Research Institute (GIRI), founded in 1994 by Dr. Jerzy Jurka, is a private, nonprofit institution devoted to the study and characterization of repetitive or mobile DNA elements in eukaryotic species. The Institute maintains and develops Repbase, also known as Repbase Update, a database of representative repetitive sequences from eukaryotic species. Repbase is being used worldwide as the reference standard for annotating the presence of repetitive DNA in genomic data. GIRI publishes Repbase Reports, a monthly e-journal that reports newly identified repetitive DNA elements, which are subsequently stored and shared in Repbase. GIRI also provides computational tools (Censor and RepbaseSubmitter) and online services for screening and submission of the repeats.

Help us shape the future of Repbase by participating in a survey

As you may have noticed already, we redesigned our website. One of the improvements for this upgrade was adding in Downloads the "Repeatmasked genomes". Currently, we offer repeat maps and repeat-masked genomes for human(hg38) and mouse(mm10). Other genomes will follow once data is mature and stable. To meet specific needs of the users, for each species we provide the results both from RepeatMasker and Censor. You can download the files here.

The FUCOBI foundation's board selected late Dr Jerzy Jurka, founder of the Genetic Information Research Institute (GIRI), and Dr Weidong Bao for the 'Johnny Castro Montealegre Award' in recognition of their scientific efforts. The award will be presented during the IMSEGI session chaired by Dr Acacia Alcivar-Warren, the coordinator for International Marine Shrimp Environmental Genomics Initiative.

Dr Bao accepted the invitation to speak about Repbase and the value of GIRI's work to the scientific community, and he will give a presentation during the "ONE HEALTH Epigenomics: From Sediment to People" session on "How it works: Repbase Update and Repbase Reports."
