Abstract:
It is 5'-truncated and followed by TGACGCGTATGA in a 28S rRNA gene. The 28S ribosoma RNA gene-specific non-LTR retrotransposon family, R4, has been reported from three species of nematodes (Ascaris lumbricoides, Parascaris equorum, and Haemonchus contortus) [1]. We here characterized non-LTR retrotransposons belonging to the R4 clade from six species of nematodes (Ascaris suum, Caenorhabditis japonica, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, Heterodera glycines, Meloidogyne incognita and Strongyloides ratti). Among them, R4 elements from five species (A. suum, C. japonica, B. xylophilus, H. glycines and M. incognita) are inserted at the same site as R4 elements from A. lumbricoides and P. equorum (Ascaridida), and H. contortus (Strongylida). C. japonica belongs to Rhabditida, and B. xylophilus, H. glycines and M. incognita belong to Tylenchida. Therefore, R4 elements with the same target specificity are distributed among at least four nematode orders: Ascaridada, Strongylida, Rhabditida and Tylenchida. In contrast, four R4-like elements from S. ratti (Rhabditida) are not inserted at the canonical R4 site. R4-1_SRa is inserted near the R2 insertion site and R4-2_SRa is inserted into a tRNA-Asp gene.
