Abstract:
This family of non-LTR retrotransposons belong to the NeSL clade. Numerous related families populate different species of Phytophthora. The most striking feature of R2I-1_PI is a ribonuclease H domain (aa pos. 1696-2088), which is not present in NeSL non-LTR retrotransposons from other species, excluding Phytophthora). The RNase H domain sequences in R2I-1_PI and related families in Phytophthora species are ~40% identical to this domain id diverse genes and plant Gypsy-encoded RNase H ( while the identity to RNase H in other clades of non-LTR retrotransposons cannot be even detected by BLAST). Most likely, this domain was recruited by a common ancestor of Phytophthora NeSL non-LTR retrotransposons relatively recently.
