Title:
MARE1: An ancient mammalian repetitive element.
Journal:
Repbase Reports 6(6), 344-344 (2006)
Abstract:
This element is shared by all mammals including marsupials. It cannot be classified at this point. Its presence in two mosaic forms MARE1 and MARE2 is characteristic for SINE elements. Also MARE2 contains microsatellite-like repeats in its 3' end, characteristic for some SINE elements. MARE1 contains a 5' stem-loop like structure at positions 16-55. It is different from all currently known mammalian repeats and it is detectable in variable number of copies ranging from hundreds to as many as 3000 copies per mammalian genome. MAREs may be useful markers for mammalian phylogenetic studies.
