Abstract:
ATHILA7_I is an internal portion of ATHILA7 endogenous retrovirus. It belongs to the gypsy superfamily and is related to the ATHILA-like endogenous retroviruses. ATHILA7_I is flanked by 7% divergent ATHILA7LTR long terminal repeats. Therefore this element has been inserted in the genome relatively long time ago; the same is cofmirmed by multiple stop codons disrupting three ORFs, which encode remnants of the ATHILA ORF1-like protein, reverse transcriptase and a hypothetical protein, correspondingly. Interestingly, there is one proviral copy of a very young retrovirus (AB005248, positions 24125-35848) that has LTRs and internal portion 91% and 93% identical to ATHILA7LTR and ATHILA7_I, correspondingly. This element is flanked by 100% identical LTRs, and its internal portion is not saturated by as many false stop codons as it happened in ATHILA7.
