Repbase Update is an Electronic Journal established in 1997
by Genetic Information Research Institute with partial grant
support from the NIH (grant 1 P41 LM062252), and it is based on
our previous work (Jurka et al., 1992; Jurka, 1993, 1994, 1995,
NCBI Repository) which originated thanks to the support from the
Department of Energy. The new format is designed to
institutionalize this publication, in order to provide an
uninterrupted supply of quality information to the genome sequencing
communities.
Our goal is to collect, review and systematically organize
representative examples or consensus sequences of repetitive
elements from all eukaryotic species. Currently, Repbase Update
is being updated several times a year based on cumulative
submissions from individual researchers. Many entries represent
original information not published anywhere else. The sequence data
and other information is organized in a computer-readable format.
Jurka, J. Repeats in genomic DNA: mining and meaning.
Curr. Opin. Struct. Biol. 8:333-337 (1998).
The following will be considered for electronic publication:
- Consensus sequences of new
repetitive families and subfamilies as well as short
descriptions of these sequences (no more than 200 words)
and adequate references.
- Extended and improved consensus sequences of
known repetitive families accompanied by new biological
information.
- Abstract updates based on recent publications.
If updated consensus sequences or abstract information
are approved, the old items will be transferred to archive
releases but references to the previous work will be carried
over to subsequent releases. Eventually, links to older
information will be established.
All submissions will be peer-reviewed and the quality of
consensus sequences will be tested by anonymous reviewers,
specialists in the field. This is the fastest way to establish
priority for your newly discovered information.

NOTE: Sequences that have been part of previous releases
that have since been removed OR alternate submissions
for existing data can be found in the "Appendix" files
within the current release.
