Abstract:
GYPSY10_I is an internal portion of the GYPSY10 endogenous retrovirus. Its long terminal repeat is listed in Repbase as GYPSY10_LTR. GYPSY10_I is flanked by 7% divergent LTRs. Therefore, the age of GYPSY10 can be estimated as ~4 million years old. The internal sequence is incomplete because of multiple deletions. Open reading frames, which originally encoded gag, pol and env, are corrupted by mutations that cannot be reversed because of a small number of available copies of GYPSY10.
